3d liquid terminator fluid effects
Software used: Realflow, 3ds Max, After Effects
Using a combination of Realflow and 3DS Max, I produced Terminator 2 style fluid effects for a set of Virgin 1 promos showing in the lead up to the second series of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Both sequences were tricky to achieve as the liquid had to exhibit mercury-like qualities, gathering together and building up as if it were alive and reforming its original shape. The liquid metal would then move quickly upwards to form a letter T, a teaser hint that the next series was coming shortly. Each of the fluid motions had to be tried and repeatedly tested many times in order to achieve the correct settings and behaviour.
Once I had the fluids behaving correctly within Realflow, I used different sets of forces, meshes and attractors to manipulate the mercury-like blobs into the T shape. I then imported the fluid mesh into 3DS Max and animated the camera moves seperately. Additional reflections, depth of field and final touches were added in After Effects.
