Robotic Visual Effects
Working as VFX supervisor for this short film, James helped create and direct numerous robotic VFX shots. One of the key sequences involved surgery using small robots. During shooting James supervised the visual effects production by making sure camera angles, lighting and prosthetics were set up for the best visual result. Once filming had finished, James began concepting and designing the robots, before modelling and texturing in 3ds Max.
Numerous elements were required in order to bring together an effective VFX shot, including shadows on the desk and arm, reflections of the arm on the robots and matching the focus pulls of the filmed plates. These were created and rendered using 3ds max, with all the elements composited in After Effects.
This sequence was nomimated for an Escape Award at the Tate Modern in 2008.
Software Used: 3DS Max, After Effects, Photoshop.
